So, in about a year or slightly more, I plan to unload the Mustang in favor of something more suited to my parental lifestyle. This means that, in the between times, I like to surf the listings for vehicles that catch my eye; interesting, character having, fun and/or fast and in the range that I want to be spending which is between $5k and $7k but not more than $10k - the reason being: I want to have some change left over to do things to whatever we end up with and so that we're still cozy with a down when it's time (shortly there after) to once again look at something newish and taking us up to twoish cars.
Anyway, I figured I'd see what my friends out there could come up with given my very flexible wants.
I'd like rear-wheel drive first, and AWD second but I'd put FWD on the list ahead of both in the right package (hello, Mazdaspeed 6 and friends) but a manual transmission is an absolute must because none of the alternatives that I'd tolerate (hello DCT) will be available in that range, in the package I'm looking for. Four doors is imperative and I'm not really all that flexible on this as it's got to family real good. I think you know how I feel about wagons, and they get top billing. The car also has to be local enough to be within my comfort zone and given that I'm in BC, that mainly means Canadian sales no further east then about Alberta but of course there are exceptions as bringing a car into Canada under $9k (I think) is pretty easy assuming the vehicle was a North American market machine (ie, available in Canada and the US).
I think that's enough. Anyway, try or don't. I'm just bored.

you could probably find a Legacy gt wagon or outback XT wagon in that price range. Surprisingly good fun for the money.

Ok, ok it was just a first attempt. I can see you definitely want to keep the performance for your next car...

It's important.
Character is also important.

Can't go wrong with a turbo brick. They are a little over your price point now but in 12 months maybe not. Watch out though, they are maintenance heavy.

How do you feel about the RX-8?
70k miles, black heated leather, sunroof, character in spades and a 9000 rpm redline
Jeez...I actually want this car.
$8,000

For many reasons. First, it's an automatic... Second, it's not the car I was looking at. I was browsing an AMG wagon at the same time, confused the prices and linked it because I'm dumb. The AMG was out of the budget. Mistake.

Not a Wankle fan. Also, want more room than the Mustang. Haha.

Here's another way to waste money, on a 9-3 with a 5 speed.
Sad part is, the sucker in me says, "This ain't half bad."
Sucker.

An older generation honda accord. fwd but still, it's in your range and you'll have change left over for other stuff.
Also, jetta sportwagon. These can easily be had for $8000ish for a 2009 model. I'm sure you can get it for a lot less if you go for an older one.
A volvo s40. These can be had for your price. You might even be able to get an s60.
Mazdas...
